I thought I was pretty much done for my trips for the year, until I saw an unknown red, yellow, and green flag on the emoji keyboard. After a quick research, I found out that it was Grenada’s flag. Without much thought besides “it’s too cold in NY and the flights are not bad at all”, I was booking a trip for the next three weeks. What started out as a solo trip became a girls trip when one of my friends heard about my plan and tagged along with less than a week and a half to go. From the moment we landed at the small, very peaceful, airport in Saint George’s to perfect 83 degrees farenheit weather and a delicious aroma of nutmeg, alongside Grenadians and St George’s Medical School Students we already knew that this was going to be something special (unlike the typical island flights were it’s 80% tourists) and we were not wrong.
Grenada, with its stunning 62 beaches, on a fairly small island (takes about 2 hours to drive from the northern tip to the southern end) is just a slice of paradise with its slow pace, local produce, delicious local cuisine, lush vegetation, and the most friendly people you’ll meet. Our first stop was in the capital St. George’s where we stayed at the Bougainvillea Apartments which was a perfect location (walking distance to the famous and largest beach on the island: Grand Anse Beach) and walking distance to downtown. St. Georges was the most ideal location to get a feel of the island’s culture: laid back and communal. By 4 PM, locals were on the white sands of the Grand Anse beach playing soccer, swimming, washing their fishing nets because it was time to call it a day as the sun was setting. Even though it is the capital, almost all establishments (including restaurants) were closed by 8 PM because it was time to go home and spend the evening with your family. That was the vibe that we got everywhere on the Spice Island: a true care for themselves, appreciation of each other, and the importance of enjoying the present day (with a shot of rum)
Even though Grenada is very small, it is one of three islands that make up the Grenadines, so there is definitely something to do every single day. We took a day trip to Carriacou (one of the neighboring islands) and it was even more laid-back than Grenada. For example- when we walked into a restaurant that smelled heavenly of curry and lambi at 1 PM, the owner looked up from behind a counter and abruptly decided that he was done serving food today just because and that was the end of the working day for him. People decided what happened or whether they want to spend the day hanging out on one of the crystal-clear, clean, beaches with either turquoise or blue waters. The common phrase in Carriacou was “why worry today about what you can do tomorrow?” If that doesn’t force you to live in the present, I don’t know what will.
For the second half of our trip, we headed to the North/country side where it seemed like time stood still and Mother Nature and God were just showing off their art skills with the landscape. We stayed at the Petit-Anse hotel where our villa was right on the beach. Everyday started with a breakfast of your choice (more food on details in Part 2 post). Then, a trip to town which was about a 10 minute drive to eat some more street food, drive around to different parishes/beaches/plantations/lakes, try to catch dinner before the shutdown hour at 6 PM when the sun and the people shut down for the day.
By the end of day 1, we knew that Grenadines was going to be one of those places where we had to savor every moment, like the locals. Spend time in community, walk on the fairly deserted, gorgeous beaches, reflect, meditate, talk to people, laugh…a…lot, eat some good food, savor the smell of cocoa mixed with spices, and go to one of the ever present waterfalls.
WHEN I VISIT GRENADA AGAIN, I WOULD:
Re-visit: The Anandale Waterfalls, the Countryside, Carriacou, the Grenada Chocolate Factory, River Antoine Rum Distillery.
Stay at: Petit-Anse Resort in the Countryside (amazing views and lots of free services like free rides to town and impeccable staff and an amazing driver (Robin!) who gives the best tour/history lesson of the countryside) and Bougainvillea Apartments in Grand Anse (perfect location: close to the beach and town, but far away to avoid the noise from traffic)
Visit: The underwater sculpture park in St. Georges, once I learn how to swim. The other neighboring islands in the Grenadines. The Seven Sisters Waterfalls.
Consider: Staying for at least 2 weeks, in order to get my oil down which they only serve on Fridays at restaurants
Remember: to rent a car, once I get the courage to drive on the very narrow roads and on the right side
Get around: on the bus, if I don’t rent a car. Do not pay ridiculous prices for cabs. The buses go EVERYWHERE for about 2 USD, as long as you get on the right one (just ask someone for directions)
Avoid: the ferry to Carriacou, because it is one very bumpy ride for people who get seasick. Instead, fly from Grenada to Carriacou (roughly 15 minutes flight)
