The food in Grenada was so good, that it deserves its own blog post. For an island that had experienced various influences from other countries during its revolutionary days (e.g. Cuba, France) and has a small amount of British expats, the local cuisine is as resilient as its people- completely reliant on the local produce and spices on the island. The locality of the cuisine is what makes it so special, because you won’t be able to get it once you leave the island/neighboring islands.

BREAKFAST

From the basics, there was no typical breakfast for us. We were eating either freshly picked guavas from the trees during our drive to town or we were eating a full on Grenadian breakfast by the oceanside (fresh cacao tea-tastes like the superior/lactose free version of hot chocolate, fried bake, saltfish) or simple but extremely delicious coconut bake with herring and saltfish. Breakfast was heavily determined by what part of the island we were in. In town, which is the busiest part of the island, breakfast was quick and heavily packed with nutrients to get you through the day. While the laid-back countryside gave us time to eat a huge buffet. While a lot of restaurants are open in the morning for breakfast, our favorite in St. Georges was the bake and herring from Andy’s Soup House.

LUNCH

As with all my trips, my number 1 rule for food is to follow the locals. Since the locals eat only lunch outside of their homes, this was the time to get the load down of the local cuisine. Between 12 PM and 3 PM, everything slows down even more in Grenada because it’s time for lunch. On day 1, we followed the locals to the Grill Master on Wall Street and we were not disappointed. With a classic, Caribbean buffet/weigh your food system, everyone from Med School students to workers were trying to get some of the pumpkin or the callalloo or the pig foot soup. Hands down, one of the most delicious and cheapest meals in St. Georges. In Carriacou, we had the best roti and local juices at the colorful Kayak Kafé (one of the very few restaurants that was open and serving food by 12:45 PM) while watching some crabs on the beach where our table was.

SNACK

Snacks are notorious in Grenada for keeping everyone until the time they can go home and eat dinner with their family. Since everything is locally made, you can get some sugarcane groundnut or some delicious yellow watermelon or pick more guavas on your way. Either way, your snacks will either be served on the streets or picked by the streets. On day 4, we were feeling a bit more hungry during snack time, so we killed three birds with one stone and went to the Grenada Chocolate Factory for a free tour/sampling of local chocolate. Afterwards, you can head to the Rum Distillery to wash it down with some shots of locally made rum after the free tour. When we were still hungry after a drive around the countryside, we were able to find a ripe cacao from one of the million cacao trees by the streets, crack it open, and suck the delicious nectar on the cocoa beans (let a local show you the ropes, because plucking unripe cacao is one of the most wasteful things you can do in Grenada).

CACAO aka GOLD

DINNER

Dinner is tricky in Grenada because every good restaurant closes by 8 PM in the city and 4:30 PM in the country, except on Fridays. For dinner, try to eat as early as you can in order to have more local options. We always counted on Andy from Andy’s Soup House for getting us our late-night grub at 7 PM. Andy had lived in the US for a while, so he understood our late-night food habits, to an extent and he was willing to feed our hungry souls till 8 PM on a weekday. When everything was closed, we went to Wall Street (the only place with anything to eat past 9 PM) in St. Georges to get some pretty good street BBQ pork and BBQ chicken with garlic bread or burgers for about 5 USD. Rule of thumb: On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, always stop by the only juice stand on Wall Street for some good soursop or passionfruit or Mauby juice to call it a night.

Dinner on Friday is a whole different ball game in Grenada. Everyone has worked during the week and it’s time to turn up. We had the best dinner at the Gouyave Fish Friday, which is a street food market with only seafood from 7 PM to whatever time the stands run out of food. If you didn’t burn off enough calories by dancing in Gouyave, head over to Venus in St. George’s for more turnip (Grenada low-key style).

Wake up the next morning, and eat everything again. The most important advice is to eat, drink, and repeat in Grenada, because once you leave, you will never get those flavors outside the island. If it’s not locally made from the fish that was caught that morning or the steeped Mauby barks or the local produce that was harvested on the island, it’s not Grenadian food.

If you’re not going to Grenada for the crystal clear water, or the stunning beaches, or the laid-back vibes, at the very least, you should go for the food.
