Aruba was the first solo trip on my ABC islands tour and it truly did not disappoint me. Honestly, my expectations for Aruba were very low because I was well aware that tourism makes up 85% of the island’s revenue which typically means that everything-from food to sights- will feel very Eurocentric. It also doesn’t help that the island has been colonized by multiple European countries and remains a constituent of the Kingdom of Netherlands, so I had no idea what to expect in terms of local Aruban culture. At first sight, Aruba looks like a meetup location for Americans and Europeans, but there is also a unique mix of different cultures that creates the Aruban vibe. From the food to the nightlife to the language to stunning scenery, the local Aruban culture felt like the result of mixing every major culture into one very small island.
Due to the history of Aruba as a smuggling and heavily colonized island, most people who are currently considered a local in Aruba are of mixed ethnicity. Therefore, everything that can be considered the local Aruban culture can be easily traced to places such as Spain, Netherlands, parts of Latin America, some countries in Southeast Asia, and some countries in Africa.
For example, one of my favorite Aruban foods is called Pan Bati, and it is very similar to the Colombian Arepa but it is slightly thicker. The local language, Papiamento is a mix of Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch. Despite the cultural diffusion in Aruba, there is a strong sense of Aruban pride among local Arubans. The locals who can tell you where their ancestors are from will also proudly announce that Aruba has always/will always be their home. That is the Aruban culture-one that reminds you of the past while telling you to live in the present. The food, the nightlife, the dance, the language reveal the island and individuals’ heritage, yet the mix of so many cultures bring you to this current melting cultural pot.
Besides the delicious local food, the highlight of the trip was the 4 hour ATV/UTV drive to the Natural Pool tour. The tour takes you around the main tourist attractions in Aruba, then through an adrenaline pumping mountain ride to the crystal clear, blue natural pool. While I might have done a couple of low-key crazy things, this ride was definitely one of the top 5 (maybe because I almost crashed twice).
If I were to do Aruba again, I would:
Eat: Quick local breakfast at Pika’s Corner or Linda’s Dutch Pancake for a taste of Aruba’s Dutch side. Dinner at Pika’s Corner for a great local cuisine or Pinchos Grill and Bar to see the beautiful sunset over the ocean.
Stay at: Carina’s studio apartments for great location and very helpful hosts.
Repeat: The ATV ride to Natural Pool.
Avoid: The overcrowded Eagle Beach. Instead, I would go to the much more calm and cleaner Baby Beach and Boca Catalina
Remember: Cabs have a set price based on regions and ubers do not exist. While public transportation is reliable, it is easier and faster to rent a car because there is a lot to see in Aruba and everything is spread out.
