Where to Eat in Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita, Mexico

This 7-day trip to Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita was a #girlsvfood trip meaning food and self-discovery was at the center of everything. Unlike most of my trips where I try to experience the local scene, pack the days with activities, and fake being a local, this was different because we were in a remote location for most of the trip. However, we kept one thing in typical #lifeonabanjo style- we ate a lot of really great food. Even if I can’t tell you what to do in either Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita, I can definitely tell you where to eat some local, delicious Mexican food, cooked by Mexicans, and served by Mexicans aka the ideal #girlsvfood experience.

Puerto Vallarta: 

Cafe de Olla: The line is no joke, if you get here around 12 on a Sunday, because it’s one of those rare places that locals and tourists love. There are two menus– Mexican and Continental. The only thing worth getting on the Continental menu is the hot cake (aka pancakes), because you’re in Mexico and you should probably eat something other than what you can get in your country. The real blessed life is on the Mexican menu. We ordered 50% (which should give you enough options to test a restaurant’s kitchen levels) of the options and everything. was. on. seasoned to the taste gods. For two non-caffeine heads, we dropped the ball by not ordering the Café de olla, but if you try it out, tag #girlsvfood and let us know how it is.

Panchos Takos: There are many food stands for tacos, but Pancho’s Takos is the OG. Another locals’ favorite becuase my goodness, the tacos are actually delicious and the bowls (it’s a bowl in the shape of a cup) of freshly blended fruit margaritas are 4 USD and you can order margaritas to go! The best taco is the Al Pastor. If you don’t eat pork, well…I truly don’t know how to ease your pain. They also have other local food options, but the tacos will set you free from Tex-Mex suffering.

Joe Jack’s Fish Shack: If everyone in your crew is a seafood fan, you will like Joe Jack’s. If you have a bigger group, call ahead to reserve the beautiful private room on the rooftop or sit on the rooftop if there’s no chance of rain. You really can’t go wrong with the options on the menu. The flavors and combinations are more on the coastal Mexican cuisine so think pungent (not subtle) flavors, but still absolutely delicious seafood.

El Pechugo: This will be one of the few times I’ll recommend a chain, because I love El Pechugo for their seasoning. This will be your quick stop spot.  You can find this chain in most main cities in Mexico, including PV, and I try to get some every time I’m in the country. One tip: order a meal that comes with everything. I still dream about those potatoes from time to time.

Punta Mita: 

For full disclosure, we really tried to explore Punta Mita’s options but they mostly cater to tourists’ taste and ain’t nobody trying to eat fries or pasta in Mexico. Then, we found gold in Dos Catrina’s.

Dos Catrina’s: A fairly new restaurant (5 months old) that is absolutely killing the Mexican food scene in Punta Mita. Sunday through Thursday, it is staffed by 95% Mexicans from the Head Chef Fernando Mendez to the hosts. The food options are from different parts of Mexico, which the chef traveled to in order to learn the local seasonings and to create a more robust menu. Every waiter is educated on the history, seasonings, and background of every dish (if it’s not from their city), so you can ask as many questions as you want. If they think you’re genuinely curious, they can invite the chef over for some more education. The same educational experience also goes into the drinks. There are two rotating bartenders, who at any point, are more than excited to give you a tableside Mezcal 101 lesson and tasting for free. I’ve eaten at a couple of places (read: my vice is food), but Dos Catrina’s has been the only one to perfectly capture the essence of Girls v Food: discovering yourself and others over authentic, bomb food. If they really like you (read if you’re a true foodie who asks 85 million questions and a generally nice human being), you can also get a private cooking class for free if you’re staying at the Four Seasons.

Last tip: the tortillas are free (almost) everywhere. Always ask for tortillas, and for the love of respect and culture, only order corn tortillas.
