FASHION RUNWAY TRENDS THAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE STREETS

If you’re anything like me- if you want to be stylish without looking too trendy- you’re probably wondering why luxury fashion brands introduce trends that will make the rest of us (everyone except Robyn Fenty) look ridiculous on the streets. I mean, we all thought match-matchy looks died in 2009, but it’s back in 2018. Throughout fashion month, I studied every fashion show for the upcoming trends that the non-luxury (aka affordable) brands would be copying, in order to catch you up to speed on everything you need to buy during fashion sales month (all the sales start in a week!). SNAKESKIN 

Snakeskin had the spotlight on everyone’s runway during fashion month (Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Hermès, and the list goes on), and it’s still having a major moment on every major fashion influencer’s Instagram. It’s easy to see why- the pattern and colors elevate any basic outfit from 0 to 100. In order to still be on the “stylish not trendy” side, I stick to one snakeskin item per outfit. Bold shoes will always be stylish, no matter the time or pattern, so I gravitate towards snakeskin shoes. In order to be a bit daring, step outside the black and white snakeskin color comfort zone and go for a more interesting color like these brown ones. 

Just like most bold patterns and statement pieces, I like to keep everything else very simple when I’m wearing snakeskin. To keep all eyes on your snakeskin item, go for things that look simple but still command the same level of stylish points like these extremely cuffed jeans and a white t-shirt with no accessories (the snakeskin is all the accessory that you need). If you have to live through the unfortunate winter season, add an extra layer in a complimenting color like a jacket or a coat to score more stylish points. 

 

PLAID

You are dead wrong if you thought plaid was only going to stay in the 90s when the show “Clueless” was still on, because Versace, Derek Lam and other brands have resurrected the plaid trend. The only key to plaid is to keep it to one bold and interesting piece.  When it comes to plaid, I like to pick interesting designs, like this pair of pants that comes in different (but complementing) designs. Remember, the bolder and more interesting, the better (this is fashion, after all).

The golden rule for styling plaid is to keep everything else pretty, classic, and simple like this classic crew sweater. Not only will you be channeling retro fashion vibes, but the classic sweater will keep you warm and ready to make the walkway your runway. Another tip is to keep the other colors on the neutral palette, because you don’t want anything that would clash with the 4 or 5 colors on your plaid. If all else fails and you’re thinking that you have nothing to wear with your plaid, grab a white top. I’ve tested and tried it and a white item of clothing never fails to blend in perfectly with anything you’re wearing.

 

MATCHY-MATCHY

I laughed when I saw this trend on more than 5 runways (Self-Portrait, Mansur Gabriel, Tory Burch etc) during fashion month because I still love a good monochrome look despite the number of people who have been fashionably shamed for it. However, before you whip out the convenient all-black look (Style Fact #5: all-black is not monochrome, it’s just a uniform.), think a little outside the box. Chances are that you already have pieces in your closet all in your favorite color, so let’s put them to use.

For me, I always like to spice up a monochrome look with a statement piece like this military-inspired coat. It just so happens that military-inspired looks are also always on trend. Without a statement piece in the same color, I think I look like a big, walking blob of paint. The statement piece could be your shoes or your jacket (if you’re always cold like me). Just have something else that says “I know fashion and I have style.”
